Far is a short performance. It occurred at the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon in South Iceland on February 15, 2015.
Instructions are as follows:
The performer places his or her feet in a pile of iron oxide. They walk until there are no longer traces of pigment in their footprints.
Shortly after the performance ended, the waves came and washed the iron oxide away.
I had visited Iceland before, many years ago. It was a short trip and I was young, around 10 years old. This was my first visit during the winter months. A strange fog sat over much of the island if the sky was not clear and the horizon slowly disappeared into the unknown. The pigment, as it faded from the footprints, mimicked this misty fog. Iron oxide is found all over Iceland and is the orange color seen in the mountains and landscape. The pigment is a natural mineral and is biodegradable. Leave no trace.
